Khalsa- For the Early Buds to Blossom

Khalsa- For the Early Buds to Blossom

Here we are, at the end of this session, hoping for the revival of our busy lives. This year has brought each one of us into dire straits. AASRA, the social service club, established in the year 2005, has been working tirelessly for the upliftment of the underprivileged children even in these difficult times. KHALSA is one of such workplaces of AASRA where all the members are devoted and diligent.

Khalsa emerged as a workplace in the year 2015. It is around 7.3 km from NIT, Rourkela. Having started with very few members and children, this workplace has now become more like a family of nearly 35 children who are mentored by 20 members. We, all the members and children as a unit, have been overcoming all the challenges and obstacles in our path and will continue to do so. When on campus, all members visit this abode four days a week as per the given time slots. With the able guidance of our Captain (Ayush)and Vice-Captain(Uday), it has been smooth sailing for all of us. There has never been any financial short-fall because of our able treasurer (Naveen) who deserves credit on his part. A heartfelt thanks to all the seniors who have contributed to this workplace over the years.

Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. - Joshua J.Marine

Our kids have been cultivating this mindset and have bagged many laurels which have been proud moments for all of us. Soma has successfully completed her high school examination(10th) in the year 2020. Two meritorious students, Suruchi and Ruchi, have cleared the admission test of OAV for the year 2020-21. Their achievements have added a golden feather to the glorious history of the club.

One of the remarkable events of AASRA, during INNOVISION, the techno-management fest, deserves a mention. The science exhibition, Little’s Science Yard, invites students from all sectors to display their innovative ideas. Students from Khalsa also participated in the event and 2 groups among them even won some goodies in 2019. There were innovative models on Constellation, Lunar and solar eclipse, Structure of lungs and Earthquake detector. Students performed very well in the exhibition and were successful in inspiring fellow kids, members and judges alike.

“All work and no play, make Jack a dull boy.”

Not just in studies, the kids are very creative in all other activities too. They enthralled the audience in last year's Foundation day celebration with their wonderful performance. A song each by a group of girls and a group of boys made the entire room musical. A poem recited by a young kid was appreciated by all. A sports event was also conducted in our workplace that brought some good spirits in them. In this way, we have tried to motivate the students by taking up more activities and games and make them realise the importance of sports and co-curricular activities in daily life.

As per Newton’s third law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This is applicable in life too. The kind of love and care we show to the kids is reciprocated in the unconditional love they show for us with their lovely smile. We have developed a strong bond with the kids, thanks to constant interaction with them. They never hesitate to share their problems, even domestic, with us. I, being a part of this family really appreciate the selfless dedication of the members and hope to see the kids succeed in future.

Khalsa is proud to have its members who are energetic and dynamic in all aspects. Even in this difficult situation, we are trying our best to reach out to all the students individually through virtual mode for completing their syllabus. Interested students will be guided for entrance examinations. We are also trying to improve the communication skills of the students.

Words from some senior members of Khalsa…

 Rajpurohit Kiran -

I had a very nice experience being a part of AASRA. I would say that AASRA helped me a lot indeed. It gave me the confidence to speak and many such soft skills. It made my days joyous with the kids. We learned more from the kids than we taught them. With the cheers of kids all around I felt happy whenever I was disturbed.

It makes us responsible to look after the kids in their education and the happiness we get when kids succeed is one I can't express. Working with AASRA is like making our memories for the future. Finally, AASRA seems simple, but it is much more diverse and a collection of all things different.

Namrata Nayak-

I joined Khalsa in the year 2019. I was a bit terrified at first whether I would be able to get on well with the children and the members of the sector. However, all my doubts and fears vanished at our first visit to the sector. The way both children and other members accepted me, I did not feel like a new member.  The children were full of curiosity and enthusiasm.  I visit the workplace twice a week. Seeing those happy souls around me acts as my stress buster. During the Little Science Yard, I  guided 3 students on a project. I was amazed by their grasping power that accelerated my interest. During the exhibition, they managed to impress everyone including judges which helped them win 2 prizes. One of the best moments I had in Khalsa was when I choreographed them for AASRA's Foundation Day 2020. They did everything so effortlessly, starting from memorizing the steps, lyrics to performing in the finals. Some of them were sad as they could not secure the prize but what amazed me was their positive attitude. A girl came up to me and told, " Koi nahi didi, humne apna 100% diya, prize nahi mila to kya hua".

We should acknowledge the fact that they are not so privileged as us. The kids could not afford good schools and private tuitions. But our guidance and mentorship might help them to achieve something in life and make them a better person. I believe one has to give it all or give none at all. A single person cannot bring change, it has to be small combined efforts from all of us.

A little contribution from us can give way to big changes in society. Sparing some time for the cause of social service will definitely bring out a smile in someone’s face .“ Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. Good team spirit among all the members has been and will definitely be taking this club to greater heights.
